It's been awhile since I lasted posted an update on my dollhouse. My husband and I have been steadily working on the exterior. I ran out of shingles today.

I'm hoping to have my dollhouse complete by Thanksgiving.

Well I missed this week's episode of "Creature Comforts" on CBS. I went to dinner with my family in Lancaster and didn't get home till 8:30 p.m.

Oh well...

Aardman Creature Comforts: I Ate So Much
Ha! I love penguins

I am a huge fan of Nick Park and Aardman Animation. I love the Wallace and Gromit movies, my favorite would be of course "The Wrong Trousers," there's an evil-jewelry-robbing penguin in it.

Now you can watch Creature Comforts on CBS Monday nights at 8pm or check out

Have you seen this Dove commercial? A model is at a photo shoot, well just watch the video, you'll see for yourself.

The commercial ends with the line "No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted."
This struck a personal chord in me. For one, I have 13 year-old step-daughter who is at the impressionable age when looks are everything. And I am also a graphic artist who is very aware of the power of photo manipulation. I have done photo manipulations at past jobs. (Photo manipulation is not permitted in news journalism.)

One past job involved a cover for a fitness magazine, where I actually downsized the model's legs and thighs so they appeared slimmer -- and yes, she was probably a size 0 to begin with.

Fashion magazines and other commercial media have a long way to go before they will change their projection of their idea of beauty. As parents we need to promote healthy self-esteem and educate our children that what they see in magazines and on TV is not always real. We can only hope that companies like Dove will help change the standard of beauty. And yes, I know Dove's campaign is a marketing scheme, but it sends a positive message that real beauty is only skin deep and not what some graphic artist or makeup artist can trick you into believing...

I am a graphic artist by trade, but aspire to stretch my artistic instinct into the realm of makeup artistry.

I love art and I see makeup as another form of art.

The canvas is your skin and like artists there are many tricks, techniques, and tools to use to achieve a certain look.

I bought most of my makeup brushes in art/craft supply stores. They're cheaper for one, and they come in a wide assortment of sizes and textures.

I also found great containers for storing makeup for traveling and for mixing, because artists love mixing their own colors. This Art Bin (yes, it's from an art store) is great for storing makeup and is easy to clean.

My latest find is Almay's Smart Shade Foundation.
Because, its like a chameleon, it really does adapt to your skin tone. Though, I caution you, if you have dark skin, it might not be dark enough.

And speaking of darker skin tones. I love LOreal's HIP Makeup. The pigments are intense and really speak volumes, a makeup artist's dream...

My house is not really in the middle of the street. I did an illustration for the HOA in our development to show residents how different landscaping might look.

The illustration went over very well and it really helped to give a visual for the homeowners.
