Earth Day page design

This is my Earth Day package design that is in today's York Daily Record newspaper.

My editor Brad came up with this idea after reading an interesting fact about Hershey Kissses. More than 80 million Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day. Placed end to end, those foil wrappers would stretch 3,157 miles -- and it's all recyclable.

First, we took a soccer ball and wrapped some aluminum foil around it. Then, I became the hand model. And let's just say being a hand model is hard work. I was sweating by the time we were done with the shoot. By the way that's Brad making adjustments to the ball. We had two versions, one was a tin foil and the other one was a newspaper, pictured below.

Here I am holding the tin foil ball. (And yes, I'm sweating like crazy)

Next, I downloaded the photo and opened it up in Photoshop. This is where the magic happens. So the idea was to have the earth look like a ball of tin foil. I found a piece of stock art of the world but since it was a satellite image of the world it was way too detailed to overlay ontop of the tin foil ball.

So, just as I was going to get on the internet to look for another image of earth... our internet connection goes down. So, I'm like thinking sh@#!, where am I going to find an image of earth that will work in the design. I went through a stock art CD and came across a rubber ball that had the image of earth on it.

PERFECT!!!

I took this image and overlayed it over the tin foil ball and set the layer opacity to multiply. I then bumped up the greens and the blues to make them pop using selective color adjustments in Photoshop. Added the headline text and placed it behind the earth.earth.jpg

And in between doing this I collected the data and wrote the intro. But, I really want everyone to know that Brad, my editor played a really big role in finishing this package with me.

I was going through some of my old artwork and I came across my wedding invitation I designed.

I created the design in illustrator about 5 years ago. Here is the front of the invite.

Here is the preliminary sketch.

I first brought the sketch into Adobe Illustrator and traced over it with an art brush...
Here's the illustrator version.

Ok, now after i finished drawing my image. I then imported the illustrator drawing into Photoshop as a Smart Object. This is where I'm adding my color.
