Graphic arts: September 2009 Archives

Again, I love children book stories, especially princess ones. Here is my version of "The Frog Prince."

This is the fashion photograph I used as reference for the pose. The frog just hopped out of my brain. The model is wearing a Betsey Johnson creation. I love Betsey Johnson's fashion.

Another bulldog cartoon...

It's no secret in the newsroom that I'm obsessed about English bulldogs, namely mine, name Diesel. This is a quick illustration I drew in Adobe Illustrator. The rat represents my friend/co-worker's obsession with rats.

This is the final graphic. I created this in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

How I created the 3D cross-section of river basin.

I first traced a flat version of the sediment levels from a chart. I scanned the chart and placed it in Illustrator as a template. This is the chart I traced over in Illustrator.

Next, I grouped all of the art elements of the chart and then went under the EFFECT'S pull down menu and selected the 3D, Extrude and Bevel. The top image is the flat view and the bottom one is 3D view. I then hit EXPAND, located under the Object pull down menu.

Once the 3D image was expanded I could go in and change colors as needed.

Creating the river

Again, I had a map of the Susquehanna River, which I scanned in and used as a template in Illustrator.

To get a more hand-drawn look to the river I used the Art brush palettes.

The white pointer boxes' transparency is set to multiply at 70% opacity. I did this so the boxes would blend in with the rest of the graphic.

This graphic will be published in Sunday's Daily Record/Sunday News.

I have a lot of fun at my job. Besides the daily graphics, illustrations and page designs I create for the Daily Record. I also lay out an entire magazine.

The latest issue of Smart.

Love sucks in "New Moon"

Love sucks. Right? In the second installment of the "Twilight" series "New Moon," Bella Swan is trying to mend a broken heart.

My page idea to coincide with the movie release of "New Moon" is a dice that has different male characters on the sides. The idea is roll the dice to see who "you" end up spending eternity with. Be careful though, you might end up with Marcus.

Here are my preliminary sketches of Bella, Edward and Jacob.

Teen Takeover: Teen abuse

| | Comments (0)

This month's Teen Takeover main story was about abusive relationships some teens face.

The idea for my illustration, just popped into my head. (That's how most of my ideas manifest.)

My idea was an illustration of a girl crying with her hands over her face. I then decided to add a conceptual piece by incorporating an illustration of another teen in an abusive pose woven into the girl's hair.

Here is the illustration.

I like the look of pencil drawing so much that I decided to continue the theme by drawing the Teen Takeover logo and divider bars in pencil.

Here is the final page that is in today's Daily Record.
