When we first published this photograph a few years ago, even my friends asked where I found this stuffed turkey to place in front of the 'no hunting' sign.
Ah, but we don't do that. As a newspaper, we cannot manipulate or mislead our readers, and have them think the photo they see is anything but real. So, how did this picture happen?
We were visiting Pymatuning State Park in northwest Pennsylvania, the largest state park in the state, home of the largest eagle population in the state, huge carp that whip themselves into such a feeding frenzy that the mallard ducks walk on top of the crowd, and the largest lake in Pennsylvania, according to the state park website.
As we watched the ducks walk carefully across the mass of carp, we noticed a wild turkey waddling down the opposite side of the street. Quite a find, we were happy to photograph a turkey who was apparently accustomed to people and the constant trail of cars. It wandered down the street, and stopped (believe it!) right under the 'no hunting' sign.
Suddenly, the ordinary photo of a turkey became something better. Funny, even.
