It's all about the light

It's all about the light when taking pictures, or in this case, snow landscapes. Compare these two photos, taken just a few minutes apart, and the differences in them.

With the sun causing strong shadows over the snow drifts, the snow looks like waves of blue shadows at left. With the sun down, or behind of cloud on the right, the snow and drifts are much less pronounced and the color more muted.

Use the 360 degree rule (imagine the subject from every angle) as a measurement of time, as well as distance or relationship to the subject. If the shadows don't show up, try in the morning, or late afternoon. You might finish with a totally different photo that's worth keeping.
