Make it a game

Taking pictures of tiny creatures is a kind of game, trying to see what photo can be made from things a quarter inch long. With help from Nixon County Park naturalist Fran Velazquez, this was identified as a larval katydid.

Children especially seem to enjoy searching flowers and greenery for bugs and other creatures. Next time your family is out on a walk, see what they can find beyond the big picture. While at Hershey Gardens last month, it was mentioned that I had found six robins nests. A family with youngsters immediately headed out to find more. My problem is that I don't know a robin from a Hudsonian godwit, then have to look for a name.

This photo was taken at the Daylily Farm in Fairview Township. Picture was taken at 1/320 second, f13, and 500 ISO with a 105 mm macro lens and no flash.

Read your nice story on the lily farm. I usually hang out there throughout the summer taking photos. Not this year though due to an unplanned and serious surgery that's put me out of commission for several weeks. Betty & I go back a few years. She amazes me at how hard she works to run the place almost single-handed.
