Garvine Mill in Fawn Township, north of Fawn Grove, is a common photographers' stop. It's old (built sometime between 1800-1830), rustic, on a relatively quiet road (state route 425) with Bald Eagle Creek flowing quietly past.
The owner, Gene Badders, came home from the Air Force and bought the place in 1963, and he's constantly trying keep the mill in one piece. On a nice summer weekend, five or six people stop to take pictures, he says. When you ask permission, Gene says "Go ahead, everyone else does." He understands.
There are dozens of ways to photograph the mill. Gregg Obst got some interesting shots here in April, and added more history.
The color picture at top left is the original. Some phone lines and a guard rail were removed. The photo then continued a trip to Photoshop Land, where it became a old black and white photo, sepia, and a painting. It's fun to play in the Photoshop toolbox, since in newspapers, we are forbidden to use most of the tools. No removal of telephone lines or guardrails, for example, unless stated.
Please remember, the land is private property. Be kind to its environment, be careful where you park. Take your picture, enjoy its beauty. But don't spread out a picnic blanket and chow down on some fried chicken and potato salad.
