The water over Holtwood Dam is returning to normal Susquehanna River levels after the weekend's flooding.

Visited the area on Monday, a day after the worst of the flooding, but water was still roaring over the dam, and still had a road closed at Lock 15, south of the Norman Wood Bridge. It's hard to imagine the amount of flooding until photos of a dry period and Monday's are compared.

The top photo was take July 31, 2005 showing plenty of rocks and little water during a quiet summer day. The photo below was taken Monday, hiding rocks and what would normally be islands in the river.

Upsteam, normal water flow on the Susquehanna's Safe Harbor Dam is about 37,000 cubic feet per second, according to its website, far below the 1,005,000 cfs during 1972's Hurricane Agnes. On Wednesday the figure was 170,000 cfs.
