Each Oct. 16 is National Boss Day.
Hmmm.
As a boss, I don't expect a big bouquet of flowers to be waiting for me when I get in tomorrow morning. Nor do I think I want one.
OK, so I might've mentioned that my staff could bring me flowers and chocolates -- but I was kidding. Really.
My real aversion to National Boss Day might have something to do with my dislike of stupid holidays.
Sweetest Day, Grandparents Day and Friendship Day to name a few.
And it's not that I don't believe that bosses should be appreciated. I appreciate my bosses. I appreciate my parents, who are wonderful grandparents, and I appreciate my friends.
I just don't like getting bullied into giving them something because someone (or some company interested in making money) chose a day on the calendar that requires me to do so.
But, in case you're still interested in National Boss Day, here are some facts I found at hallmark.com (imagine that) about National Boss Day:
• According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 14 million individuals are employed in management occupations, and about 37 percent of them are women.
• Workplace surveys confirm that one of the most important elements of job satisfaction is a positive relationship between a supervisor and employee.
