Did you see the article in this morning's YDR about Barbie?
Mattel, the company that created the plastic doll, is building an online world for Barbie because her sales are down so much because little girls would rather play on the Internet than with actual toys.
According to the article, girls spend seven hours each week on the computer, which is twice as much time as four years ago.
That means childhood icons like Barbie are suffering without a computer aspect. To fight declining sales, Barbie now has a Web site: BarbieGirls.com.
The Web site is designed in Barbie's signature pink and lets girls interact with each other through B Chat. Young girls can compile a list of online friends and send virtual gifts and play games on the site.
But the whole point of playing with a doll is to foster creativity and imagination. Little girls invent storylines with multiple characters and plot twists. And Barbie dolls are something they can play with other people, in person, rather than interacting with people they may never see or meet. Playing with toys in a real environment fosters relationship and communication skills.
There's nothing wrong with building computer skills at a young age, but there is a problem if it comes at the expense of cultivating life skills.
Whether you love her or hate her, Barbie, and other toys like her, serves a vital function in young childhood development.

I love Barbie ever since! This is a nice idea having Barbie in the net. I remember as I watched a quiz show and the host was asking if Barbie is a real human standing 7 feet what will be her waistline, I suddenly stumbled and think hard!
