Gas prices put a crunch on fishing

One of the good things about York is that it's a relatively short drive from a lot of places: Baltimore, Harrisburg, D.C., Philly, etc. And probably more than most people realize, the same is true for good trout fishing.

The stretches of the Codorus, Muddy and Yellow Breeches creeks with good fishing are all within 30 minutes to 45 minutes of York city.

But, a half-hour's drive or a little more isn't that close anymore, once you start translating it into dollars.

I was already a little frustrated about not being able to squeeze in "quick" fishing trips as often as I'd like to. Growing up, I could ride my bike to good fishing faster than I can drive by car today.

Now, I can't even justify fishing trips when I start adding up gas costs. It's about an average of half a tank of gas to get to the stream and back, regardless of the stream I choose.

Part of me wants to start fishing for those ugly carp that live in the city's stretch of the Codorus, just to stay in practice for the rare but coveted weekend trout adventures.

Are others out there feeling the gas crunch on your hobbies? And if so, what are you doing about it?
