Local food for your children

I like posting real "win-wins" any time I find them because they are so rare. Maryland apparently wants to put more local foods into its schools, and I think it could have a positive affect on a lot of different issues.

Obviously, local food is fresher and can be lacking in preservatives and processing byproducts, so it's healthier. But also, local can require less fuel to get it from farm to plate, and we all know how high gas prices are. Of course, these fresh foods can be more expensive, making any property tax payer wince. But fuel prices are the main contributor to higher food prices, making far away, prepackaged foods might be closing the gap with local, fresh foods in the future.

I really don't see too many negatives to this process. Read it for yourself here and let me know if you do. It basically comes down to this question: Do you wish your kids were eating more fresh foods at school, and if so, how much are you willing to pay for it?
