Companies should watch police reports for next business opportunities.

The next time your trash bill comes, think about how angry you would be if someone started stealing it before the garbage man came in the morning.

Angry? You'd be delighted, right? No more having to pay the bill if someone hauls it away on a regular basis free of charge. But who would want to steal your trash, right?

This is why criminals are the best capitalists in our society. When I was the day police reporter in York, I could tell what consumer goods were in demand by what things got stolen around the city.

Everyone needs a cell phone, so criminals stole those. Then, the metal thefts began at churches and construction sites, so I pretty much knew the price of copper must have gone up.

I could tell from police reports before any business reports were compiled about national commodities trading.

So what's the next big thing? Big vats of used cooking oils from fast food restaurants. I kid you not. Criminals are trying to be among the first to capitalize on the new biodiesel markets, according to this article. Business-minded, and by default environmentally friendly. Brilliance!

Meanwhile, the computer program in which I am typing this business blog doesn't even recognize biodiesel as a word.

In today's post-subprime meltdown, I'm sure a lot of people don't see much difference between a good, old-fashioned capitalist and a criminal. Neither do I. But I'm just saying that might not be such a bad thing.
