Blu-ray dominance may be years out

PhilipsBluRay.jpgBack in February, I wrote about how Blu-ray beat out HD DVD as the new high tech. way to watch movies.

This morning I came across this article in the Baltimore Sun that said even though Blu-ray was crowned the king, many people are still relying on standard definition DVD's.

Many people are finding the $300 or more Blu-ray players too expensive right now. They say they have a DVD player that works just fine right now, why would they jump ship.

Another contributing factor is that the Blu-ray movie selection is still a lot smaller than regular DVDs. Many people don't want to move to format that doesn't provide as much of a selection of movie titles.

And of course the economy plays a role. With gas and food prices crunching a lot of people's budgets, there's not room for extra splurging right now.

Experts quoted in the article do expect the Blu-ray format to eventually take over standard definition, but the switch may not be for a few years.
