How walkable is your neighborhood?
One of my blog buddies point out this really cool Web site. Punch in your address and it will rate your neighborhood on how car dependent it is.
My neighborhood in Manchester Township scored a pathetic 37 out of 100, which means I basically have to drive everywhere.
I plugged in the address of my friends' apartment building in the city, and they scored a whopping 88 out of 100. That means they can walk to almost anything they need.
The site also lets you view the rankings of the most walkable cities in the country.
Not surprisingly, big cities seem to score the best, but if you punch in "York, Pa." for the address, you will get a 97, which is a better score than a couple of the big cities. Washington D.C. for example only scores a 70 (although specific neighborhoods in the city score much higher.)
Check it out if you have a minute.

My downtown Mechanicsburg apartment rates a 65... not superb, but not bad either!

When you live in the sticks--how about a 23? That website also told me I'm 4.85 miles from the nearest Starbucks which is okay cause I don't drink that nasty stuff anyway, and 4.82 miles from the nearest theater. That too is okay--the last movie i saw in a theater was Patton, I think. Were you even born yet???
As for DC--at least there's excellent transportation available with the Metro running in every direction into the suburbs. One can live in the city and never own a vehicle.

Mine was a 15. Not good at all. Looks like I have to get in my car for everything!
