For parents: Why kids playing video games is a good thing

Almost every child in America plays video games, according to this study. I wanted to cry when I read it. I didn't play video games, and about half my friends didn't.

But I'm willing to bet the kids who played video games in my high school class now make more money than those who didn't.

Why?

Familiarity with technology, being comfortable with it.

I had that conversation with a person connected to my Boy Scout troop about 10 years ago, and he was worried about his kid playing computer games all the time. He wanted a pep talk for pulling the plug, knowing that I hated them.

But I told him to let the kid keep playing, because I was already realizing how much catchup I would need to play to be tech savvy enough for whatever job I got. And last time I heard, that kid was on some tech track and will be making a bunch of money soon.
