Paper or plastic?

Or reusable?

The national movement to cut down on the use of plastic grocery bags was gaining steam, according to this recent New York Times story.

However, once the national economy soured, so did the movement. Apparently many officials don't want to impose fees on plastic grocery bags when folks are strapped for cash as it is.

Weis Markets introduced a reusable bag program in 2007, according to company spokesman Dennis Curtin.

Customers who brought their own bags received a three-cent redemption per bag, Curtin wrote in an e-mail.

However, the company stopped offering the redemption in September 2008. Reusable bags, nevertheless, remain available at Weis for 99 cents, Curtin wrote.

Plastic bags can contribute to street litter, ocean pollution and carbon emissions produced while being manufactured, according to the New York Times story.

Any ideas on how local supermarkets can cut down on the use of plastic bags?
