Anstine's provides unique experience

Anstine's Candy Box in York Township has a certain familiarity that a business can only attain when it has been around for decades.

In other words, shopping for Anstine's candy -- most of which is made on-site -- is an entirely different experience from buying a bag of Snicker's bars from Wal-Mart.

The place is so small that there's barely anywhere to park. Its retail area is tiny, and customers are constantly saying "excuse me" to one another as they maneuver from one end of the store to the other.

Its shelves, though, are stocked this week with any kind of Easter candy imaginable. Almost an entire wall is devoted to candy eggs -- peanut butter, chocolate cream, cashew caramel and orange cream, just to name a few.

It's the kind of place where -- even amid the crowds shopping for last-minute Easter candy -- a person can take their time choosing the exact variety of chocolate bunny they want.

The business, which dates back to the 1930s, doesn't offer the hand baskets made popular by the Wal-Marts and Targets of the world.

Instead, customers picking out large quantities of candy from the shelves are encouraged to stack their orders on the counter until they're ready to check out.

After all, store manager Allen Dalby cautioned customer Carol Schintz, the chocolate could melt in your hand if you hold onto it for too long.
