It's tough to tell how many summer jobs are out there for local high school and college students.
A job-search Web site, SnagAJob.com, reported that 73 percent of managers are expecting more applications than last summer, but 23 percent expect to hire fewer people than last year.
There is some good news, however, for young adults in York County. Crispus Attucks' center for employment and training is offering a program this year that aims to place 200 local young people -- ages 17 to 24 -- in temporary summer positions.
Some local businesses are also looking to hire young people. Jeff Schroll, area supervisor for seven local McDonald's restaurants, said each of his restaurants is looking to hire between five and 10 part-timers, positions which could be filled by high school or college students on summer break.
Giant Food Stores and Weis Markets can't quantify the number of openings they currently have, officials at both stores said.
"In certain classes of trade, there's always a need," Weis spokesman Dennis Curtin said, "because there's usually turnover."
