Owner: Quick closure best for Harp & Fiddle

The Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub and Restaurant's Monday closure seemed abrupt.

Business was down and the York restaurant needed cash, owner Jimmy Fagan said. The Harp & Fiddle's ownership team, therefore, decided to close the restaurant immediately, Fagan said, rather than pour more money into a failing endeavor.

Many of the Harp & Fiddle's regulars, hearing that it was destined to close for good, surely would have flocked there for one last beer.

But they couldn't. The restaurant's last day of business was Saturday.

The Harp & Fiddle might have turned into a "free-for-all," Fagan said, if the ownership team decided to keep it open an extra week or two.

For instance, Fagan recalls seeing bartenders at another soon-to-be-closed restaurant giving out free drinks. A new mentality seemed to take hold once the owners announced the restaurant's closing date.

Think of fans taking home a stadium's seats after its last game and you get the idea.

The Harp & Fiddle, Fagan said, will know no such fate.

I am very disappointed that The harp & Fiddle closed. i am really hoping it will reopen. I also would love to know what to do with the gift certificates that I still have that are not expired. They are worth $100. I love eating at the harp & Fiddle and cannot believe it is closed!!

I too have gift cards worth over $60. I was planning on going there next week. Do the owners have any plans to refund the money already spent at their establishment?
