More crockpot news, this time it's pork and sauerkraut

| | Comments (3)

To be clear, I never liked pork and sauerkraut when I was a kid. And mashed potatoes? Forget it.

But, my husband does and my son likes the pork. Those are reasons enough for making it. And after putting together a cheap and easy meal with pork and sauerkraut, I kind of like it now too. We all have to make some sacrifices. :-)

And making it in the crockpot? Holy simple.

I first bought a huge piece of pork in one of my grocery-shopping trips. I can't remember what cut it was, but it was big. So big that when I took it home I was able to cut it up in three pieces and freeze them. The entire pork was under $10.

On Sunday morning, I put one of the frozen pieces in the crockpot, took a pouch of dry onion soup mix, a half cup of brown sugar and a big can of sauerkraut (about $2.50 total for all three ingredients) and mixed the three together. I poured the kraut mixture over the pork, added a little water and turned the crockpot on.

About 8 hours later, my husband threw together some mashed potatoes and we had dinner. I'm estimating dinner was under $10 for all three of us. And we had leftovers the next day.

I do not know what to say. Here are my initial thoughts as I was reading this. OMG! What planet is this person from? She has totally desecrated not only York County's Meal, but that of all Pennsylvania Dutch. She must be related to Joan Concilio! What? Lives in York County, PA and does not like sauerkraut? Or mashed potatoes?

And Cathy, I'll just bet that you did not place your sauerkraut on top of the mashed potatoes on your plate. This is shameful. I dread thinking what you must do to a hot dog and sauerkraut.

LOL Jo!
I didn't have any mashed potatoes with the kraut. And this probably won't surprise you either -- I'm not a fan of hot dogs. (uh oh... did i just post that?)

Whatever happened in your childhood to make you anti-mashed potato? This is a first.

Since you readily admit being also anti-hot dog, this tells me you cannot be related to Joan who loves them even more than I do.
