The recession is over. Really?

| | Comments (2)

By now, many people have heard that a U.S. Commerce Department's report has found that the national economy grew by 3.5 percent in the third quarter, heralding the end of the Great Recession.

But is the recession really over? It depends who you ask.

An economist might put up numbers and charts to support that the recession has ended.

But, what about the 8.6 percent of unemployed residents living in York County? What do you think their answer might be?

When I read that the government had started to tout nation's economic recovery, an image of a frazzled police officer with arms held high yelling into a riot that "there's nothing to see here" popped into my head.

What do you think? Is the recession really over?

Is the recession over? Technically yes- but of course people are still feeling the pinch. One of my customers put it very well, "We were falling, and we've stopped falling....but now we're in the sewer and it's going to take a little bit of time to climb out."

I think that last quarter was helped by Cash for Clunkers and the end of the $8,000 tax credit. The fed may have a false-positive on its hands. Lets see how next quarter works out.
