Martin's Potato Chips and bad weather ... forecasting

| | Comments (0)

I tagged along with one of our writers, Sean Adkins, on a tour of Martin's Potato Chips in Jackson Township on Wednesday.
Sean is working on a snack-food-related story for this Sunday's edition.
I love potato chips, so the smell from the plant was intoxicating. I think Sean was being nice in letting me hang with him on his assignment.
But in chatting with Butch Potter, company president, we found out how the snack food industry is holding up in the economy. You can read Sean's story for that news later.
But what struck me as interesting is how Potter said that the weather forecasts -- bad weather forecasts -- leads to bumps in their sales.

It's weather forecasts that we need to pay attention too. If the weatherman misses a big snowstorm, we don't stop by the grocery store to pick up our snacks. And just the opposite is true, if the weatherman says we're in for a big snowstorm and nothing happens, Martin's benefits because we went out and stocked up on snack food.
Bottom line is, if we joke about stocking up on milk, bread and toilet paper because of an impending storm, we should now add chips to that list.
