The sometimes-criticized, sometimes-lauded Car Allowance Rebate System, also known as "Cash for Clunkers," poured tens of millions of dollars into the local economy through new car sales in York County and part of Adams County and removed gas-guzzling trucks from local roads in favor of smaller, more fuel-efficient passenger cars, according to recently released National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures to be published in this week's York Sunday News.

But the program's success remains open for debate.

Its effects bypassed some local dealerships altogether, while some local consumers, taxpayers and businesses question its bureaucratic red tape, federally advertised gas mileages and the environmental effects of producing new cars to meet the program's demand rather than just keeping the old clunkers on the roads.

See this week's York Sunday News for the full story.
