Government may upgrade window stickers

The window stickers in new vehicles that contain information about gas mileage could be getting a big upgrade.

The Obama administration wants to display a grading system on the new stickers (an example of which is at right, courtesy of the Associated Press), giving cars anywhere from an A+ to a D based on their "fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions," according to this story in the New York Times.

Some industry groups opposed the idea, the story said, asserting that the government "should not be making value judgments for consumers about vehicles."

The administration's Cash for Clunkers program last summer also met resistance on similar grounds, from people who didn't like the government getting involved in private industry by way of offering $3,500 or $4,500 rebates on new cars when people traded in their old "clunkers."

What do you think? Would a government grading system get in the way?
