Walmart's plans to expand into Africa have run into opposition.

The company made a preliminary offer to buy Massmart, a Johannesburg-based retailer, which would mark its first foray into Africa, according to multiple published reports. However, the Congress of South African Trade Unions plans to oppose the move, according to Forbes.com.

"These companies are notoriously anti-union and anti-workers rights, and an affront to workers rights wherever they operate around the world," the congress said, according to Forbes.

Walmart has been in the news locally during the past year or so, renovating its West Manchester Mall, Shrewsbury and Springettsbury Township stores and planning to open a new store in Newberry Township.
