Drawing parallels: Is York city the "Little Apple?"

I didn't really question the message a former coworker wrote in my farewell card when I left my last job. He told me to have fun working in the "Little Apple."

I fully accepted this was just another nickname for the White Rose City. It made sense, I suppose. York city is just one word short of that famous place Frank Sinatra sings about.

I thought about using the term "Little Apple" in this story last week.

People in the newsroom rolled their eyes at me. My editor barred me from using it.

Trying to justify the nickname, I drew similarities in my mind between the city that never sleeps and the city where everything closes at 8 p.m.

They have the Hudson River. We have the Codorus Creek.

They have Times Square. We have Continental Square.

They cheer for the Yankees. For us, it's the Revolution.

They ride the subway. We might be getting a trolley.

Despite the critics, I think it's an awesome name, and I intend to keep using it. Maybe it will catch on. What do you think?

You're joking aren't you? Say yes.

Jo - I'm kidding about the comparisons. I know the Hudson River is nothing like the Codorus. But, in all seriousness, I came here a few months ago actually believing this was York city's nickname. I'm glad I've since been corrected.
