How do you pronounce the word "coupon?"

coupons.jpgA college friend and I were discussing an extreme couponing trip we plan to take this weekend before heading up to Penn State.

For those of you who aren't familiar, extreme couponing, popularized by the TLC show, involves working the system. You buy things only when they're on sale in large quantities and you use copious amounts of coupons, instant rebates, etc.

Sometimes you actually MAKE money. I've never done it, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyway, I got to thinking about the word "coupon" and an argument I had with an older friend a few weeks ago.

My whole life I've pronounced this word "Q-pon" (like a distant relative of the Q-tip). He ridicules me and says it's pronounced like "coo-pon." In some cultures, I've even heard it pronounced "coo-pin." So please, humor me. How do you pronounce "coupon?"

Thanks for the comments, folks. I'm glad you all appreciate my pondering of the English language.

I can't believe 17 people believe coupon is supposed to be mispronounced "Q-pon."
