York trolley turns quickly from plan to reality

I was driving down Mason Alley toward Duke Street last Tuesday afternoon when I spotted what appeared to be a traffic jam at the intersection of the two roads.

As I got closer, I realized that what I saw was not a traffic jam at all. It was actually the new trolley that recently started transporting people around York, stopped at the intersection.

I had read about the trolley before, but this was the first time I saw it in person. It was pretty cool.

I followed it down Duke Street, onto Philadelphia Street and then watched as it turned right onto George Street. I couldn't help but feel impressed at how quickly the plan to start the trolley in York became a reality. A sample trolley sat in downtown York for several hours one day in March to give passersby an idea of what it looked like.

At the time, it seemed like hurdles to starting the project still existed. Officials with Rabbittransit said the whole thing was in the conceptual stage. A schedule for the trolley needed to be worked out, according to Downtown Inc. York County President Commissioner Steve Chronister had secured pledges of about $25,000 for the trolley, but operational costs were estimated to be $50,000 to $75,000 annually.

That's why I was surprised to learn in early May that the trolley was making its debut. When I saw it for the first time last Tuesday, I was impressed.
