York's Maewyn's extends lease; length unknown

Maewyn's, the Irish pub on North George Street in York, sent out a press release Thursday morning. The restaurant, which opened in February 2010, had signed a lease extension with the owner of the building it occupies, the release stated.

Intrigued, I called Ken Painter, director of food and beverage for Heritage Hills, which owns Maewyn's. For how long has the lease been extended? I asked him.

Painter declined to answer, saying instead that the lease extension represented a commitment to downtown York. The deal's terms, he insisted, were between Maewyn's and its landlord, Wagman Construction.

I told him that it was tough to know how much commitment the lease extension really represented without knowing its length.

"We have a long-term vision," he said. He noted that Maewyn's had partnered with the York Revolution to provide catering at Sovereign Bank Stadium's Bud Light Picnic Pavilion. That arrangement is going well, he said.

"We're trying to build and foster (relationships)," Painter added.

I was also wondering how much traffic Maewyn's had been seeing since it opened 16 months ago. The space's previous occupant, the Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub and Restaurant, closed in July 2009. The owners said at the time that they weren't getting much business.

I asked Painter what he has been seeing in the way of foot traffic.

Traffic is building, he said, but the restaurant needs to continue to build it. Cross-promotion and doing things with the Revolution are good ways to do that, he said.

"We are seeing a positive trend," he said.
