Clipping more coupons?

| | Comments (1)

If so, big advertisers are trying to target you.

I think it's nice that there is a growing demand for practical ways to drag in customers instead of just trying to attract people to sparkle and shine.

So if you are clipping coupons, what are you looking to buy with them? And what tactics can still get you to buy products considering the bleak outlook?

Taco Bell is giving away a free taco to EVERYONE next week

I used to think companies did those "if a sports player does X, we'll give away Y" promotions to get their names out there, without having to give away too much product for free.

Look at the bread sticks giveaways at Revs games from Pizza Hut, where they pick one player, and if they player gets struck out by a Revs pitcher, the entire crowd gets free bread sticks.

Not a whole lot of people involved, and not an overwhelming chance it'll happen - but everyone who ever goes to a game gets to thinking about Pizza Hut bread sticks. Now granted, it's happened a good bit, but still. The odds are better that it won't happen.

But after Taco Bell's promotion at the World Series, I rethought the logic. Or maybe Taco Bell is just dumb. Because if you really didn't want to give away a taco to every person in America, you shouldn't have said everyone in the United States could get one if ANY player stole a base in ANY game of this World Series.

These two teams run the bases. A LOT. And now, everyone in America gets a free taco between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. next Tuesday. Only took til about half way through Game 1 last night.

So I want to see if the little ploy actually works. If you go get your free taco, York County, and then decide to buy more Taco Bell products based on that one taco, please let me know.

Got word of this e-mailed from a friend this morning, and if you have a pet, you probably want to click the link to find out if your pet food, treats or whatnot are on the list.

The list of items possibly contaminated with a strain of Salmonella is pretty long.

The information is also on the FDA Web site, and it's a voluntary recall.

Dover area getting discount grocer

If you want a change from a traditional grocery store, you might want to check out the new SaveSmart coming to Weigelstown soon. It'll replace the old Nell's Shurfine that closed earlier this month.

Here is what we have so far on it.

Discount is how they are marketing it, and it won't look like a traditional grocery store to keep costs low. So what do you think? Will that make you come check it out?

Tainted dog food issues strike babies in China

Another reason to buy American: The same sort of chemical that made its way into pet food shipped to the United States last year from China and killed our pets has made its way into baby formula.

Three babies have died and thousands are sick in China, and evidence of the tainted milk has spread to other countries.

And again, the reason is shady people using chemicals to fool quality inspectors and make more money. This makes me sick.

Another reason to watch Mad Men ... they talk about Utz

I've had trouble getting into Mad Men, the uber-nominated show from American Movie Classics, a network I've traditionally turned to for my John Wayne fix. My trouble probably has something to do with its rise from cable near obscurity while the new Battlestar Galactica languishes off the Emmy radar screen.

But during a commercial for Mad Men the other week, month, or however long ago, I could have sworn I heard them talk about Utz.

Note: If you've never seen the show, it follows the all-male world of Madison Avenue advertising in the 1960s and how ad execs use all kinds of tactics to get their customers' products sold. And, there are a whole lot of bedroom antics without happily ever afters to follow.

Well, looks like they were talking about Utz after all. So what do you think about such a big show making a storyline out of one of our local companies?

In June, Chris Robins worked to open his cupcake stand at the farmer's market.

If you didn't catch it in this morning's paper, check out Nicki Lefever's story in the Living section about a local mother-daughter duo who went into business selling homemade granola.
