Restaurant renaissance

While retailers such as Office Depot and Circuit City are disappearing from the local landscape, restaurants seem to be doing just fine during this time of economic turmoil.

Since the beginning of the year, both the Wild Tuna Bar & Grill and Pomodoro's Italian Restaurant & Grill have opened in York County boasting solid menus and positive attitudes despite the fact that more people tend to eat at home during a recession.

And don' t think it's just independent restaurateurs looking to make a little cash off of local residents.

What's it worth?

A Michigan woman recently put this heart-shaped Snyder's soy crisp up for sale on eBay.

The woman, Bonnie Swatek, says it could be a good Valentine's Day gift.

The starting bid? A mere $99.

So far, no one has placed a bid. Swatek says that if she doesn't get $99 for the chip, she's keeping it.

No question, the chip would make for a unique gift. But $99? That seems a little steep.

Chips seem to come in all kinds of funny shapes and sizes, as you can see from this "paranormal potato chip gallery."

Have you ever found a food that contained an image of a person, place or thing?

Candy hearts? Yum.

As I was editing a story today about the candy-maker Necco, I didn't realize it at the time, but I was munching on their Sweathearts candy as I was editing. Necco has been making the candy since before the Civil War.

It's Valentines Day on Saturday, so you are bound to have one of the pink and red boxes of the message hearts somewhere in the workplace. I've seen at least three this afternoon alone.

Don't forget to check out our story on Friday on the candy hearts. It looks like Necco is expanding their offerings. In March they are offering the "Twilight" series message hearts. I guess this begs the question: Is candy recession-proof?

News from York's Market and Penn Street Farmer's Market

A coworker forwarded this Exchange post to me. Looks like a group is getting together to form a 'Friends of Farmers Market' group for the West Market Street market.
They would like local farmers market fans to join and preserve the market. Let us know what you think.
