So long

To all the faithful readers of York Common Cents, I have a bittersweet announcement to make. After 10 months with the York Daily Record/Sunday News, I'll be leaving to take a job in Washington, D.C.

I'm sad to leave, but I know that Brent, Sean and Cathy will continue keeping this blog up to date with the latest money news. Check back often for updates on gas prices and what's going on in the local business community.

I encourage you to check out the gas map on inyork.com/drive. A few stations in the area have officially dropped below $2.00 per gallon!

I'm glad I get to leave you with a bit of good news before I leave! It's a welcome change from all the negative economy news lately!

Craving cheaper gas

I get really jealous whenever anyone has cheaper gas than me. I wasn't having too much of a problem with it earlier this year because York County definitely seem to have some of the cheapest prices around.

Now it seems we have some of the highest (at least in my little realm of reality). My friends in Maryland are telling me how they're filling up for less than $2.

To make myself feel better I hopped over to inyork.com/drive to look at the map provided by Gas Buddy of station prices. It made me feel a little better to see we still have cheaper gas than lots of places in Lancaster County. And we have cheaper gas than my little brother in Philly.

I recommend checking out the map. It's interesting to see where York County falls in the spectrum of gas prices.

More gas price confusion

I wrote not too long ago that the differences in gas prices at local stations really had me baffled.

Well after this weekend, gas prices have just left me more confused.

The past few weekends I've been visiting friends in Maryland and Washington, D.C. and gas prices there have always been 20 to 30 cents more expensive than here.

So when I filled up my car last night for $2.38 in Maryland, I was expecting to see prices closer to $2 in York. Needless to say that wasn't the case. Everything I saw in York was around $2.33.

How did that gap close so quickly?

Wow gas prices are falling ...

So I just said about an hour ago on the blog gas prices have fallen a lot, down to $2.75. Well, I just saw $2.59 while running out to walk my dog.

So where do you think the bottom is? Will it actually get "cheap" again? And what exactly would a "cheap" price be?

York County commuters still want to carpool

A colleague of mine says gas isn't "cheap" until it falls below $2 per gallon for regular. And apparently a lot of you out there agree.

A couple-year-old local service that tries to hook up commuters with possible carpool partners send me a press release today, saying that it added 1,000 new participants since early September.

Commuter Services of South Central Pennsylvania, as it is known, now has 11,000 members. The growth is despite gas prices falling since early September to around $2.75 per gallon for regular.

So my question is this: Is this because people have the foresight on the interest in saving the environment to start carpooling? Or are people so scared about the economy that they are pinching the pennies they were willing to spend just a few months ago?

Gas prices baffle me

I saw two gas stations owned by the same company no more than one mile from each other that had two different gas prices. One was $2.75. One was $2.79.

What gives?

Doing a happy dance about gas prices

I was out of town this weekend for my cousin's wedding in Allentown. I had to fuel up before I headed out of town Thursday evening. I think about paid $3.25 per gallon.

When I got to Allentown prices were lower, ranging from $3.05 to $3.13.

But my entire family was shocked as we drove from the wedding to the reception and saw a gas station where prices were $2.94.
