Could you still work if your computers went down?

Brokenlaptop.jpg

We learned the hard way yesterday that you can't do a whole lot of work in the modern office without a working computer network.

It didn't last long (happens to everybody at some point) but it still sparked a flurry of making backup plans, waiting for updates and other behavior akin to hunkering down during a natural disaster.

And me? I dug out that big, yellow book that's more dust-bunny habitat than directory nowadays. People still make phone books, ya know?

Of course, beyond calling a bunch of people and taking notes, I couldn't have done a whole heck of a lot. What does your office usually do when the computer network, or power for that matter, goes down?

The dog ate my...shoes

Most people know that sneakers and dress pants don't mix. Unfortunately, I've recently been spotted around the office sporting sneakers instead of my usual, nondescript dress shoes. And it's all because my dog mistook my shoes for chew toy.

We love our java

After I read Brent Burkey's local story on how York's smaller coffee shops were still buzzing in this economy, I remembered my trips to the local java places in downtown York.
Whether it was a caffeine fix or an excuse to get out the office and take a walk on George Street in York, there's something about local shops -- and not only coffee shops -- that make you feel more connected to the community.

Is Gen. Y spoiled or devouted?

Now, I know I was idealistic coming out of school. Most grads are. But I am amazed that 68 percent of the members of Gen. Y (referring to someone who graduated high school in this millennium) said they would not work for a company that was not "socially responsible."

Scroll down on this story for the talking point, under the "More than just talk" heading. I kid you not, it's that high. I for one was very surprised.

What do you think? Is this the start of a more philanthropic capitalism ruling the world? Or does it mean 68 percent of Gen. Y have hopelessly limited their job prospects?

Week in Biz:

With just a few hours until the weekend, it's time for your dose of business news.

My pet peeve ... "making" time

Every time something new comes along, we "make" time for it. But unfortunately, "making" time is an illusion, and some real smart physicist out there should write it into every text book along side that Law of Conservation of Mass we had to memorize in high school.

"Matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction." I remember that.

But where was the "Anything that gets put into your schedule or to-do list must have the equal and opposite result of kicking something out of said schedule or to-do list."

Stephen Hawking, I'm waiting.

My big pet peeve with the whole making time concept is that when you think you have "made" time for something, you have actually kicked something out of your schedule without knowing it. And often, it's something that will come back to haunt you later.

Just admit you can't "make" the time and cut something. It'll hurt a lot less later.

If you have a story to share about how you made time, and it turned out poorly, post a comment.

In the meantime, here is a lengthy-but-comprehensive look at how to prioritize your time. "Making" time might be an illusion, but this tells you how to fool people into thinking you know how to do it.

Let me know if you plan to try this, or if they forgot something.

Facebook gets a facelift

Facebook_New_Profile_Shot_1.jpg
My roommate from college e-mailed me in a panic a few days ago to tell me Facebook had changed...again.

But when I logged on, it looked the same to me.

This morning though, I noticed the switchover. More like the switchover smacked me in the face.

What's making me fat?

I don't mean that I'm literally getting fatter over here, but I thought some of the information in this TreeHugger series is really interesting.

First the blog includes this map showing the obesity percentages in each state.
