The York County Heritage Trust has just released a hardcover biography of J.W. Gitt, controversial owner of The York Gazette and Daily from 1915 to 1970.

Mary Allienne Hamilton, for years the foremost authority on Gitt, is the author of this 342-page book. She worked for Gitt in the 1960s and went on to a long career as journalism professor at St. Bonaventure University... .

This book grew out of her dissertation at Michigan State University but is written with the pen of a journalist and covers everything from Gitt's childhood in Hanover to his correspondence with luminaries in the post-World War II Progressive era. Of course, it recounts his colorful tenure at the helm of The Gazette and Daily, too.

I wrote a York Sunday News column on the book and also blogged on the McCarthy-era's loyalty probes attempting to get at Gitt. For other Yorktownsquare.com posts on Gitt, search the blog's archives.

The book is available for $29.95 at the York County Heritage Trust, 717-848-1587, and www.yorkheritage.org.
