"The Memory of Running"

I sat on the floor of the fiction section of Martin Memorial Library and stared. So many books, so little time. What lead me to the Mc section was a recommendation from another reader, but I couldn't recall the title (now I know it's "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy). What I found was "The Memory of Running," by Ron McClarty.

Being a runner, the word in the title jumped off the shelf, but the book was really about so much more. McLarty wove many serious issues that face Americans (schizophrenia, obesity, alcoholism, death, addiction, love and adventure) into one well-told story that made for a fast read.

The book follows the main character, Smithy Ide, on a quest to find the answers as to why he turned into an overweight loser with no friends. He finds so much more as the story of his past unravels along the way.

The book can get a little quirky at times, but it's worth it to get to the good parts.
