A visit to heaven

"90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life” by Don Piper and Cecil Murphey

90minutes

This book is not only for people who believe in heaven, but also for those who don’t.

The Rev. Don Piper was driving home from a conference when he was hit by a tractor-trailer. He and his car were so mangled that the police and EMTs pronounced him dead. As they waited for a coroner to arrive to officially pronounce him, the Rev. Dick Onerecker, another minister from the same conference, came upon the accident.

He offered assistance. The officials told him the truck driver was OK, but the man in the car was dead.

Though they told Onerecker that the man was beyond prayers, he felt a compelling need to go to him and pray. He managed to convince those in charge to allow him to go to the man.

“I’d like to pray for the man in the red car.”

“Like I said, he’s dead.”

The compelling feeling intensified and he tried again. “I know this sounds strange, but I want to pray for him anyway.”

They allowed him to go to the car.

While the discussion about Don’s death continued, and with Onerecker praying intensely over him, Don went to heaven.

He describes a place so wonderful that it gives you hope that you can go there, too. He saw all his deceased friends and relatives and he felt nothing but joy. He heard music beyond description. He tells about the experience and how happy he was to be there. Then the experience ended and he was surprised to find himself back in his body, with his friend praying for him.

Onerecker soon realized the “dead man” had a pulse.

This book tells the story from one man’s point of view. A man who was “dead” for 90 minutes and the turn his life took after he recovered from the accident and his visit in heaven.

This is not one of your “going through a tunnel” or “seeing a white light” stories. It is, however, fascinating reading. Once I started reading, I had to read it all. Within two evenings after work, I was finished. To me it was obvious that something wonderful had happened to him. I’d like to believe he visited heaven and that it’s a place I may visit one day also.
