The book: “Magic, Luck, or Guardian Angels” (iUniverse, $8.95)

The author: Joe Reilly, 53, lives in New Oxford. He has been a sailor, truck driver, bounty hunter and repo man. “I figure I’ve been doing research (for his books) up until now,” Reilly said. He now writes full-time.

What it’s about: “This is the first in a series of books of short, fictionalized
stories. Sometimes hair-raising, sometimes funny, but always entertaining adventure stories,” Reilly said. “Stories that take you back to when times were simpler.” Many are based on his own experiences growing up in Pennsylvania, repossessing cars in Texas and driving big rigs.

Excerpt: Suddenly, we heard something we weren’t ready for. Off to the east, we could hear the blare of the train as it approached the trestle. Looking that direction, we could see it as it started across. I looked in the other direction, the way we had come, and knew that we couldn’t make it to the end before the train would catch us

Fun fact: Reilly hopes to use the proceeds from his book sales to purchase enough land to enable him to adopt wild mustangs.

To buy: Books can be purchased at iUniverse.com or Reilly’s Web site, www.conivincowboy.com.
