The book: “Choices” (Kapribooks, $13.95)

The author: Katrina L. Burchett, a York native and 1979 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, now lives in Jacksonville, Fla. “York is part of my history, which is why it was the only city where I wanted my story to take place."
What it’s about: This young adult novel is about five girls in York who find themselves facing decisions about premarital sex.
Excerpt: Shauntice’s eyes marveled at the beauty of the single peach rose Terry handed to her, but she didn’t take it. She didn’t know how to after the way she treated him, and besides, she couldn’t accept something so beautiful. She didn’t feel she deserved it
“You don’t like it, huh? I knew I shoulda got the red one, but peach was ...,” Terry paused. The reason he bought the peach rose was because he read that among other things its meaning was “let’s get together,” but he didn’t think Shauntice would be interested in that. “Unique. Like you,” he voiced his second reason for buying it.
Shauntice didn’t say anything, because she didn’t know what to say. This guy actually went out and paid for a rose for her. Without knowing if she would even appreciate or accept it. He took a risk, for her, nonetheless. This couldn’t be happening. Terry couldn’t be real.
Fun fact: “When I lived in York, I loved ham boats from Jim & Nena’s. So I just had to mention them in the story.”
