voyage

Tony Horwitz, author of one of my favorite books, “Confederates in the Attic,” has written “A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World” (Henry Holt, $27.50). This time Horwitz travels to Plymouth, Mass., to explore the earliest and least-known encounters between Europeans and the natives. It’s bound to be quite a trip.

mother

Former President Jimmy Carter writes about his mom, “Miss Lillian” Carter in “A Remarkable Mother” (Simon & Schuster, $22.95). Strong role model, anyone? This would make a great Mother’s Day gift.

Mason-Dixon Public Library
will unveil its new mascot at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown. The only hint we’ve been given is “the mascot responds to its new surroundings and the people it meets.” Hmmm. Have they cloned the Phillie Phanatic?

Local storyteller and poet John Terlazzo will present “Into the Wilderness,” an evening of stories and poems, community discussion and ideas at 6:45 p.m. May 12 at Martin Memorial Library, 159 E. Market St., York. The free program is designed to spark thoughts and ideas among participants of all ages.

ed

If you enjoyed watching “Living with Ed” on HGTV, you might want to pick up a copy of “Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life” (Clarkson Potter, $18). In it, Ed and his (long-suffering) wife write realistically about how they made their lives environmentally smart and how you can, too.
