Book Clubs
Are you in one? I've been in one for 10 years -- pretty remarkable, right? My group is all local -- in fact most of us live in the same neighborhood, so it's very convenient, especially during the winter.
What I'm interested in is how do you choose the books you read? That is our biggest dilemma.
We aren't a certain "type" of book club -- we try to read all types, but mostly those dealing with something we would find interesting as a group of women with similar experiences. We usually do a classic during the winter months after the Christmas maddness has passed, and something a little wacky during the summer.
Not all the books we've read are winners, but I think we have been consistent with picking good books for discussion. After 10 years with the same core group, (we've had people come and go) we sort of know what's going to work and what won't. We also know what type of book we might be getting depending upon which group member recommends it. The final choice for our monthly selection rests with the hostess for that month. We figure if she's going to the trouble of getting ready for the other 11 of us, we should at least read something she's interested in.
Let me know how your group chooses-and any recommendations you want ot pass along. I'll do the same.

My book club will turn three years old in October. It's a hodgepodge group of young women in 20s and 30s and we all bring suggestions for books to each meeting and kind of go with the consensus. Sometimes we'll do an e-mail vote, but we don't get too formal. If someone doesn't want to read a chosen book, they don't have to.

Our book club of 37 mom's just read a book that we all loved, (and that never happens). Taylor Wilshire's THE BOOK OF MOM. Is a perfect summer read, hiarious, can't put it down about a mom that burns out and how she gets her passion to life back. Packed with Oprah-like self help tools that not every one likes, but this book is a keeper!
