For the beach

It was the perfect week for a beach book, even though I wasn't anywhere near the ocean. I was in my living room, in fact, when I would much rather have been biking on the rail trail.

But when the temps are in the high 90s with a heat index into the 100s, it's the perfect time to grab a book and stay in the air conditioning.

"The Judas Strain" by James Rollins will appeal to fans of "The Da Vinci Code." Both stories involve a code and the Catholic Church. Both have lots of action and dead bodies lying about.

But "The Judas Strain" also has a contagious deadly disease, a plot that connects with the travels of Marco Polo, clues written in angel script, and -- although it seems a bit over the top and not really necessary considering what else is going on -- CANNIBALS!

No folks, this is not chick lit.

I struggled a bit to keep all the different plot lines straight and I like my characters a bit more developed. But if you're mainly interested in lots of action, "The Judas Strain" will fit perfectly into your beach bag.

As a bonus, the first chapter of Rollins' new book, "The Last Oracle," which releases in July, is included.
