Cats vs Dogs

For the first part of my life I was a cat person. I enjoyed their independence and their superior attitude to all.

Then, five years ago my daughter brought home a puppy. It was the classic "isn't he cute, can we keep him" scenario. Well, I was hooked. I still love cats, but there is something about a dog's unabashed joy in life that gives them an edge in my estimation.

That's how I feel about these two books, "Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World" by Vicki Myron and "Marley and Me: Life and Love of the World's Worst Dog" by John Grogan.

Do you think they are best-sellers because dog and cat lovers are buying them? Do they have cross-over appeal to non-pet people?

After reading both books, I have to say that I found "Marley" a better read. I laughed out loud during certain parts. I felt the writing to be better. After all John Grogan is a newspaper columnist, and "Dewey" was written with the help of Brett Witter, who is listed as a contributor (ghost writer?). I also didn't care for Dewey reading Vicki's thoughts and telling the reader about them. I felt that to be a bit much.

Both books are love letters (I did cry while reading them), and whether you're a cat or dog lover, you will find something pleasing about them both.
