Ravenous reader

I think I would call myself that. I know that's what my family thinks I am. But, I was in New York this past weekend and I didn't open a book. That isn't to say I didn't read anything.

I had a book with me in my pocketbook but didn't open it. Every library and museum I went into I would pick up their free brochures and pamphlets and read those.

At the New York Public Library on 42nd Street, I found out the history of the building, the names of the lions outside the main entrance and two blogs by city librarians that I want to check out.

From the Museum of Modern Art pamphlet I learned about the special exhibitions and the history of the museum.

I even got a map of the buses for Brooklyn and Manhattan and a listing of programs that the city libraries have scheduled for 2009. I might be able to use some of those ideas at my own libray.

At the Brooklyn Museum of Art, I read about the feminist art piece The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago, and how the Egyptian reliefs came to end up in Brooklyn.

So, you don't always have to read a book to be a reader.
