Cooking: books and blogs

french.jpgI love cookbooks. That isn't to say I like to cook, I'm more of a baker than a cook. But I love looking at cookbooks, especially ones with glossy photographs. My favorite section to hang out in at libraries and bookstores is the cookbook area.

cookies.jpgEach Christmas I get another book for my collection. This year it was "Martha Stewart's Cookies"- it has lots of yummy photos.

Along with cookbooks I love reading blogs about cooking. My favorite is by Rebecca Federman, a librarian at the New York Public Library. On her blog (www.cookedbooks.blogspot.com) she talks about cookbooks and graphics, restaurants and recipes. The NYPL has an extensive collection of restaurant menus also. Why, you ask? Well, several years ago they were almost thrown out, until a group of marine biologists came in to research the menus to find out fish migrations of the 19th century! You never know what will be needed and by whom.

julie.jpgAlong with cookbooks and blogs about cooking, I like to read books about cooking itself. One that I especially liked was "Julie and Julia" by Julie Powell. In this book the author attempts to make recipes from "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" by Julia Child, while living in a tiny apartment with an even tinier kitchen in Queens NY. It's at times laugh out loud funny, and sad. (This is being made into a movie staring Meryl Streep as Julia Child. It has an August release date.)

I'm feeling a litte hungry now, so I think I'll go eat something.
