"Fortuna" by Michael Stevens

fortuna.jpgComputer whiz kid Jason Lind finds the online role-playing game Fortuna more addictive each time he logs in. Set in Renaissance Florence, the game is true to the lifestyles and economics of the time period.

Lind is assigned the role of priest, but he soon finds himself in a love triangle. Then in debt. Then wondering if things happening in the game are becoming a little too much like those in his RL (real life).

When he takes a job at his father's old company to earn money to pay off his debt, he finds himself working on a computer program that his father designed. Soon he begins to question everything he thought he knew about his father's life and his death in a freak car accident.

"Fortuna" is Michael Stevens' first book and I must admit that even though I don't know much about online games, I found the world of Fortuna enticing.

I wish Stevens had fleshed out his characters a bit more. And I would have enjoyed more detail. But there's enough action to keep the pages turning and the plot kept me guessing. I stayed up late to finish it.

You might want to pack this one in your beach bag.
