It was the first event in our new series of programs, “The NewsVroom: A Year at the York County Libraries,” where we’ll visit each of the 13 York County library locations and interact with community members on issues you’re interested in.
This month, the community members were 10 Cadettes and troop leader Jackie Smith. The issue? Journalism. From our smartphones and iPads to our different websites, apps and social media accounts, we shared what tools we use and what we’re involved in beyond a newspaper. Then the girls had the chance to put all their new knowledge in action, as they “interviewed” and wrote a story on Brittany’s beagle, Emma.
We chose to visit the libraries because we think York County libraries’ mission — “to strengthen the York County community and to enrich individual lives by supplying information, providing recreation, promoting literacy, encouraging life-long learning, and serving as the hub of our communities” — coincides perfectly with the NewsVroom’s — “to create a hands-on experience for the people of York County to better understand how new tools and technology for sharing news and information help improve life in our community.”
You can find a full write-up of our program in Dover at the NewsVroom blog (including plenty of pictures of the night’s star, Emma). And check back with us in February as we head to Paul Smith Library of Southern York County for a session on social media.
