I hope you’ve already marked your calendar — Book Nook Bonanza, one of the largest used book sales on the East Coast, is setting up camp in York June 21-23.
The sale began 55 years ago as a fundraiser for York Hospital Auxiliary, said Lisa Oriolo, events specialist with WellSpan. This year, organizers received record donations.
“The community has been really generous,” Oriolo said, estimating about 250,000 new and used books, music items and artwork.
Volunteers — about 50 of them — have manned the donation warehouse since Labor Day, but the final push kicks in the week prior to the sale, with 100 volunteers working to organize and set up the sale at the York City Ice Arena.
“It’s very well organized for somebody who really wants to go to one particular genre,” Oriolo said. “Or it’s always fun to just go up and down the rows.”
The sale caters to everyone from casual summer readers to homeschooling families to collectors seeking hard-to-find titles. This year also brings a large collection of comic books.
The sale opens 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 21, with an admission of $5. Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a $2 admission. The sale closes from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday and reopens with all items half price. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, one yardstick’s length of books is $5.
The auxiliary has been working in partnership with York Rescue Mission to recycle cardboard and damaged books, so that “something that we can’t sell doesn’t go to waste,” Oriolo said. Proceeds from the sale benefit WellSpan’s SAFE Nurse program, nurses specially trained to work with physically and sexually assaulted children and adults.
