York Township author H.B. Knight debuts with fantasy novel ‘The Revolution’

"The Revolution" by H.B. KnightImagine a world where the United States no longer exists. Anarchy and disease reign, until one man restores order to the territory of New York.

So opens “The Revolution,” a fantasy novel published in July by York Township author H.B. Knight. The story follows Tessa, a young woman just discovering her supernatural abilities, as she tries to unearth the truth about Lord Delvin’s motivations and role in “The Fall” and destruction of society.

We caught up with Knight to hear about her inspiration.

Book Buzz: When did you begin writing?

HBK: I’ve messed around with stuff pretty much all my life. I’m pretty creative. But I never sat down and seriously wrote — this is my first book.

BB: The idea for “The Revolution” came from a dream. Was it just one part, or the whole idea?

HBK: It was pretty much the full story. I woke up and started telling my then-boyfriend all about the dream, and he listened for a while, because it was quite lengthy. He said, “You really should write this down, because it would make a good book.” So I wrote it down, writing by hand. It just got so lengthy, it grew into an actual book.

It’s funny, because (when) it started out, one of the main characters, I had originally intended for him to be an alien. I didn’t want it to take it that sci-fi, though, I wanted to keep it more fantasy. So it changed a bit, but the concept is still the same.

BB: What draws you in particular to writing fantasy?

HBK: I really enjoy fairy festivals, things that are a little bit more on the different end, which isn’t typical for someone who is also a scientist. I kind of enjoy both ends of the spectrum there. I think (fantasy authors) take you to a world outside this one that can be a really great escape from the monotony.

BB: How did you choose to publish through Amazon’s CreateSpace?

HBK: I looked up a lot of options, trying to decide what to do. When I started writing the book, I also had a document with a character outline, their purpose in the book, pictures of actors I envisioned them as. I had a thought that this would make kind of a really interesting movie. Traditional publishers often confiscate the movie rights.

The other option was self publishing. I came across Amazon’s service and they would custom tailor to what you need. I have an art degree, so I could make my own cover, do my own Photoshop work. It wasn’t as though I was completely on my own, but I didn’t have to worry about people taking my rights and royalties.

BB: You plan on continuing this series. What can readers expect next?

HBK: I’m working on the second book. I’m in the fourth chapter. I have a pretty good idea of where I want it to go, but I’m not 100 percent sure if I can get it done in one book or if it’s going to have to be two. The first book has to be a bit of world building. The second one jumps right into the action.

You will find out kind of what happens at the end of the first book, but there’s a whole lot more that Tessa didn’t know about. You find out more of what happened in “The Fall.”

Yep! We try to run a good chunk of our online books coverage in print as well, to reach readers who might not see the content online.
