Manchester Twp. author Scott Mingus wins award for Civil War biography

"Confederate General William 'Extra Billy' Smith" by Scott Mingus Sr.Congrats to Manchester Township author Scott Mingus Sr., who won the Nathan Bedford Forrest History Book Award this month for his 2013 biography, “Confederate General Williams ‘Extra Billy’ Smith.”

Handed out by the Forrest Cavalry Corps, the award is given “to authors writing on the subject of Southern history ranging from the colonial period to present time,” according to a release.

“I am pleased and deeply honored to receive this award for my biography of Extra Billy Smith,” Mingus said in the release. “He was a colorful character whose career has too long been overlooked. Bringing him back to the limelight for modern readers has been a pleasure, and I greatly appreciate the recognition with this award.”

    Thanks so much for posting this! It was indeed an honor to have received this award. There is some material in the book on Extra Billy’s visit to York in late June 1863.
